Department of Animal Nutrition

Animal Nutrition Science is a basic department, therefore, it had been established before establishment of Faculty of Animal Production in 1992, while it was a department in Faculty of Agricultural, the Animal Nutrition course was teaching in Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The Department is intended to perform teaching, training and qualifying undergraduate and postgraduate students in animal nutrition. The Department teaches (9) courses with practical in under graduate program and (10) courses in post graduate programs in two semesters.

The important buildings in the department are the reference laboratories:

  1. Animal Nutrition Laboratory:

The place where the most of animal feeds in Sudan have been evaluated. The following experiments are conducted in the laboratory:

  • Proximate Analysis.
  • Two stage digestibility.
  • Gas Production technique.
  • In situ degradability (Nylon bag technique).
  • Fiber fractionation.
  • Ammonia-nitrogen.
  • Volatile fatty acid.
  • Urea value
  • Determination of Non Protein Nitrogen (NPN).
  • Anti-nutritional factors (Tannins, Saponin, Phytate, Trypsin inhibitor and phenols).
  • Improvement the nutritional value of low quality feeds.
  1. Biochemistry Laboratory:

The following analyses are available in the laboratory are:

Glucose level

  • Cholesterol level
  • Tri-glyceride
  • Total lipids
  • Total Protein
  • Globulin
  • Uric Acid
  • LDL
  • HDL
  • VLDL
  • Macro and Micro Minerals
  • Chromatography
  • In-vivo digestibility
  • Nitrogen balance
  • Degradability
  • Poultry nutrition
  • Rabbits nutrition

The department has two research units (small and large animal units) to conduct the under graduate and postgraduate experiments. The experiments that conducted at research units are:
